Personally, I’m not a large fan of jazz. I own a couple of CDs from jazz artistes. I have a rough inkling of what goes down in a simple 12-bar blues progression. Occasionally I’ll look up a famous jazz musician on YouTube and be in awe of his or her…
A little piece I wrote for local music website 5minutemusic.
I got rail at Coachella between Thom and Jonny and waited for 8 hours.
Before the show Nigel walked in front of me and he said “Hi” when I shouted his name.
I was basically the only person dancing, so yeah they noticed me pretty fast. I felt Jonny looking at me and I was so intimidated by him I couldn’t look back.
Thom winked his left eye at me during “Weird Fishes”, and laughed when some guy shouted “Play ‘Talk Show Host!’” and I answered “Shut up, they’ll play what they want”.
At the end, Ed pointed at me and gave two thumbs up.
And after some fighting, shouting and begging for a setlist, Plank felt so sorry for me that he gave me one.
I cried like a baby afterwards it was embarrasing.
Catching Kimmo Pohjonen was mostly an impulse decision on my part. And with little prior research - I entered the Esplanade Recital Studio not really knowing what to expect.
As he silently took to the stage I couldn’t help but be fascinated with his outfit. Dressed in a sleeveless top and a really nice, full length skirt paired with boots - Pohjonen grabbed his accordion and started the show.
The stage was set rather simply - a white screen behind Pohjonen either projected computer-generated graphics, images from the cameras on his accordion or simply cast his shadow on the screen.
Pohjonen cleverly uses samples, creative loops of his accordion and his own voice to create a multi-layered soundscape. His style seems to be a blend of steampunk, freak folk and ambient sounds amongst other things. His music comes across as remarkably innovative, completely experimental and unpredictable.
Pohjonen is as much an entertaining performer as he is a remarkable musician. He plays his accordion unlike any other. Needless to say, the performance was quite unlike anything I’ve ever heard or seen.
Take a listen to my favorite track of the night, Regenerator , as it is performed here by Pohjonen in Shanghai.
Someone just asked, “what constitutes indie and how can someone become less indie anyway?” Well obviously an artist can be considered indie or independent by not signing with a label or signing with an independent label instead of a major one. But I think that indie is more of a sound and a…

I’ve been listening to My Head is An Animal, the debut album from Iceland’s Of Monsters and Men for a week now and it’s one of those albums that pretty much any fan of indie music—or just good music—will enjoy. Here’s the single, “Little Talks.”
how I managed to miss this duo is beyond me. Kisses make excellent, and highly danceable disco-pop. kinda like if New Order and Hot Chip were chillin’ at a beach resort.
It’s a nice list - though I’m disappointed that Heart wasn’t inducted as well.
Red Hot Chili Peppers, Donovan, Guns N’ Roses, Beastie Boys, Laura Nyro, The Faces, Freddie King, Don Kirshner, Cosimo Matass, Tom Dowd & Glyn Johns.

Flea wrote this little piece on being inducted. I was just talking about Flea the other day with my bass shifu and how he’s heavily influenced by Paul McCartney and stuff.
